Land of Giants

Solmar V's big animal adventures in the Socorro Islands and the Sea of Cortez.
If you want the excitement of big-animal encounters, Solmar V is an excellent choice. From November to June the boat visits Islas Revillagigedos, also known as the Socorros Islands. South of the Baja peninsula, these islands are strictly live-aboard territory, and the waters are thick with giant mantas, many different species of sharks and even humpback whales. The giant mantas will come right to you, more fantastic looking than any of the fictional aliens dreamed up for Star Wars. Since mantas strain the water for plankton when they feed, they are often encountered in somewhat murky conditions where the plankton is plentiful, but the blue water in the Socorros is perfect for photography and video. Save some film for the schooling scalloped hammerheads, singing humpbacks and the occasional whale shark. June to November, Solmar V cruises the Sea of Cortez, where you can expect to meet sea lions face to face. Lots of sea lions. The agility of these animals is astounding, and their inquisitiveness makes diving with them an incredible experience. In addition to the ubiquitous sea lions, the Sea of Cortez also boasts encounters with whale sharks, hammerheads and dolphins. Solmar V has a generous dive deck and stairlike ladders that ease getting in and out of the water. Diving is a walk in the park because all the work is done for you. Inside, the inviting polished mahogany interior warmly welcomes post-dive get togethers and activities. Outstanding food and service make it difficult to leave the table after meals. In addition to air conditioning and a private bath, each cabin has its own TV and VCR.
