Wakatobi Dive Resort

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Indonesia’s legendary Wakatobi Dive Resort stands at the forefront of science-backed marine conservation and community partnerships in a privileged location in the Banda Sea. Guests who venture here can look forward to incredible underwater experiences within Wakatobi’s private marine protected area, stretching across more than 20 miles of reef with more than 50 mapped dive sites to explore.
The resort’s resident marine biologist monitors reef health using techniques like eDNA sampling and 3D imaging. Wakatobi’s Collaborative Reef Conservation Program currently employs more than 400 locals, including many former fishing industry workers who now earn their living as “guardians of the reef.” As Lorenz Mäder, who opened the resort in 1996, says: “A fish pulled out of the water turns to dust the moment you harvest it from the sea— but a fish left in the water is truly worth more than gold.” Those riches are for both divers and nondivers to discover here in Southeast Sulawesi, one of the world’s finest regions for diving and snorkeling that’s home to hundreds of fish and coral species—from the tiniest pygmy seahorses to pelagic species like manta rays and schooling barracuda and trevally. For photographers, every dive offers extraordinary wide-angle and macro opportunities.
The resort fronts a white-sand beach overlooking the western Banda Sea, with step-out access to a shallow coral-filled lagoon for shore divers and snorkelers alike. Accommodations include traditionally styled bungalows set in a waterfront palm grove and oceanfront villas with private plunge pools. A new courtyard residence recently debuted here too, with private chefs and butlers, 8,000 square feet of space for up to eight guests and unlimited diving with exclusive boat access just for the group. All accommodations are within easy walking distance of the open-air dining pavilion and central longhouse with its lounge area, multimedia facilities and dive center. The culinary team creates gourmet cuisine and accommodates special dietary requests.

On surface intervals and for guests who don’t dive, there’s plenty of fun to be had, from kite surfing and wakeboarding lessons to culinary classes, private island excursions and visits to local villages. At the on-site spa, Indonesian and European treatments range from Balinese massages and scrubs to aromatherapy and more. For all the resort’s indulgences and adventures, Wakatobi’s staff is a huge part of what keeps repeat guests coming back. From the dive staff and front office teams to restaurant staff, housekeeping and groundskeepers, it’s the team that creates the warm, family-like atmosphere that truly sets the resort apart.
At the end of a fabulous day, there’s no better place to toast the good fortune of being part of Wakatobi than the resort’s famous jetty bar, with artisanal cocktails and the most spectacular sunset views. It all adds up to an incredible dive vacation and memories for life.
